Wouldn't it suck to be the new kid at school? You're basically ignored, and it's up to you to try and break into existing social circles. At Mechapixel, we don't think that scenario is much different from being a new member on a community-based website (such as ours), so we've done something about it.
The Adopt a Noob program lets experienced Mechapixel members adopt brand-new Mechapixel members (noobs), and be their guide; their go-to person for questions. The noob and adopter initially correspond via private messages on the site, but dialogue can then be taken to email or instant messaging, if they wish. This program was created as a permanent exercise in community-building.

Any Mechapixel member who has been registered at least one month can adopt a noob. These adopters are called Big Brothers (or Big Sisters, if female). They can adopt up to 3 noobs at a time. The adoption period officially lasts for 1 month, but of course the Big Brother/Sister can keep in touch with the noob past this period.
Any new member who has registered within the past month and verified their registration email (and thus officially become a member of the site) will appear on this page, below. They are automatically available for adoption. Their chances for being adopted greatly increase if they are already active on the site (creating entries, commenting, posting in the forums etc).

If you've been a member of the site for at least a month, you can adopt your very own noob! To adopt someone, check out the available noobs below. Be sure to view their posts, entries and comments, if they have any.
Once you've found someone you want to adopt, click the link on the far right. The page will let you know if there are any problems (i.e. you already have 3 active adoptions), and if not, prompt you to confirm your new adoption. A private message will automatically be sent to the noob, informing them of their new Big Brother/Sister. It will be then up to you to send a follow-up PM, saying hello!
