Some stuff from the weekend...

Giant root ball of a fallen tree: by Josh Delp, on Flickr

Found a secret pump track someone is building right down the street from me. by Josh Delp, on Flickr

Probably the same person who rode my front yard log ride (found tracks the other day). It was pretty sketchy originally so I revamped it yesterday and now I can manage to ride it. by Josh Delp, on Flickr

Cool! How are you liking that fork?

RepoMan 2017-02-21 12:07

Loving it... it's way more advanced than the Lefty I had on a 2005 bike and it feels great on this bike. My other primary bike has 160mm of travel and even at 120mm on this bike I don't feel like I'm missing that extra 40mm.

Speaking of that bike, I had that one converted to a 1X10 drivetrain (was a 2X10 originally) and it rides great. Lots of bike changes for me recently! by Josh Delp, on Flickr

So a few days before I wrecked my shoulder, I had to take the bike back to the shop because the bottom bracket had shifted to the right by about half an inch during a ride. Basically Cannondale had put in a cheaper, threaded bb with an adapter to make it pressure-fit... one of the cost-saving bits I guess. It shouldn't have moved in any case! The guys at the shop called Cannondale, who recommended they use a bonding compound to fix the bb adapter in place. I had one ride on it after that, then I was out of commission for 3 weeks. When I got back on, I noticed it was a bit creaky under stress; not horrible but noticeable. On subsequent rides the creaking seemed to be getting worse, so last weekend I biked out to the shop so they could have a look at it. They took apart and re-packed the bracket, didn't fix the creaking. I left it with them for further investigation. When I went in yesterday to pick up my new road bike, they had just swapped in a new bb from another bike (same kind) and it was still creaking; which means it's the adapter, which is BONDED IN PLACE so shouldn't be moving at all!

So far this has all been at no expense to me, as it's a new bike. At this point, the plan is to completely gut the bottom bracket and put in new, non-Cannondale parts, and get Cannondale to pay for it, since their parts are obviously shitty. I don't know if Cannondale is going to pay for all their labor as well, but in any case they won't be charging me for it!

So that's the BB30 bottom bracket with a converter? I see they do BB30 with a Tange BSA converter on some models.

That's lame that it's creaking, but nice that it's all no charge. This is way too early for something like that to be going on.

Some clips from the last couple weeks...

That temperature this weekend. WTF. And maybe a show ride this coming weekend?

Not cool bouncing us from the 70s to the teens week to week.

RepoMan 2017-03-06 16:12

I was not very happy putting on layer after layer of winter gear after riding in shorts in short sleeves a couple weeks ago. Also not happy with the frozen finger pain.

NocturnalGuy 2017-03-06 16:18

I was out for 4.5 hours yesterday in -5C... shoulda had a balaclava! At about hour 3 I had to duck into a building to warm up for a few minutes, couldn't move my lips properly. I was in shorts last week too.

Pretty much like that

NocturnalGuy 2017-03-22 16:46

Finally, after much back-and-forthing between the bike shop and Cannondale, and me having to send Cannondale pics of the bike, Cannondale has agreed to pay for the replacement of the bb with something better! So allowing a couple of days for the shop to get the new parts in, I should be able to get everything swapped this weekend. Just in time for rainy season.

ash# 2017-03-23 7:26

Niiiice. Yea I am not sure when we will get out again here. Froze up pretty good last night. Was going to head out this morning, but just could not motivate for a 19 degree ride. Might check this afternoon to see how muddy it is.

Great news that they're making good. I wouldn't cry too many tears for Cannondale or Specialized. Those two seem like the monsters of the industry these days and they pretty much take over local bike shops for themselves as part of their sales agreements.

RepoMan 2017-03-23 13:13

Yeah, that's great. I went around with them a few bikes ago with a creaky bottom bracket that turned out to be because the bottom bracket of the frame was welded off-kilter by a hair. The bike shop noticed it looked a little off and then did measurements to be sure. Cannondale replaced that frame.

NocturnalGuy 2017-03-23 15:16

I just discovered Trailforks... looks like a great resource!

ash# 2017-03-24 7:25

I clicked on that link, and the trail system that popped up was the place I used to ride when I lived in Maryland. that's fucking random.

RepoMan 2017-03-24 8:39

That's pretty cool.

NocturnalGuy 2017-03-25 16:51

Sweet new bb/crank installed, and thanks to Trailforks I've found a bunch of trails I didn't know were there! :excited:

Now to just wait out the mud

NocturnalGuy 2017-04-10 14:19

Well, I was finally able to get out on the Habit today, and, well, check out this clip I just sent to the bike shop:

Needless to say, I am not pleased. At this point it has to be a frame problem, right? I mentioned Repo's thing to them. Now I await their response...

b0rg9 2017-04-10 15:04

Man that sucks. My bottom bracket has been making a tiny tick -- nowhere near that -- that I can almost tune out. But I think mine's just finding the right screw that just needs a nudge of tightening.

Can you feel what's making that sound in the pedals. That's loud.

NocturnalGuy 2017-04-11 9:01

I'm now in touch with a Cannondale rep directly. Tomorrow morning I'm going in to grab a Scalpel Si Carbon 3 as a loaner until they figure this out. Not too shabby!

RepoMan 2017-04-11 13:24

Careful that thing doesn't blow away in the wind

That's a pretty sweet deal.

NocturnalGuy 2017-04-11 13:39

Holy shit, this is a nice bike! The guy ended up coming to my house to pick up my bike and drop this one off. It's a bit small, but jesus it's sweet.

RepoMan 2017-04-11 14:24

Sheesh, that is a nice bike. Yeah, looks like you have that seatpost extended to its limit!

I see online they spec 11-42 cassette but that looks like the big 46 pie plate instead of the 42? Which is nice because that has a 32 in the front? My Bad Habit was spec'd with 11-42 but it came with 11-46. Nevermind, just zoomed in, that's the 46

NocturnalGuy 2017-04-14 10:45

So I took the Scalpel out in the woods for a few hours yesterday. About 45 minutes in, the rear derailleur cable got snagged by that big pie plate and got twisted and frayed, leaving me unable to shift out of top gear. I had foolishly headed out without any tools. I walked out to a trailhead and asked a couple of other riders for a hex wrench, but no luck. One of the awesome things about having these trails right in the city is that I could just pop out of the valley and ride 5 minutes up the road to a bike shop. Got it sorted quickly, and headed back to the valley. Holy crap this is a sweet bike! I've got it until Monday, so it's gonna be a fun weekend :excited:

As for my bike, it turns out the bottom bracket is fine, and it's the pivot bearings that are causing the noise. They are going to replace them, but I'm not thrilled that this noise issue first appeared on my 6th ride on the new bike! Dude from Cannondale said that someone my size should expect to be servicing them more frequently than a smaller rider, but that's a ridiculously short lifespan.

ash# 2017-04-14 11:35

Thats a bunch of crap. I am 6' 3" 200 pounds, and I ride at least 2 seasons before a pivot overhaul. And I kind of ride the shit out of my bike. I mean if you were riding it at the Whistler bike park doing 10 foot drops every weekend, then maybe I could see faster wearing. You got a bad set of pivots on the bike and they dont want to admit it. Hopefully they will be fine now that you have freshies in there.

RepoMan 2017-04-17 7:52

My Bad Habit has started making noises at the pivots. I'm going to pull them and see if there's any grit in there, but this is good to know.

Ooh man, imagine if that had pulled the derailleur into the cassette and snapped the dropout. That would have been a costly mistake for that shop leaving the cable too close to the cassette.

NocturnalGuy 2017-04-26 19:49

Picking up my Habit tomorrow, with new, higher-quality pivot bearings. The shop is still fighting with Cannondale, but they're not charging me for it!
