Folmer, 63, was in the first year of his fourth term of office. A statement released by Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, R-Jefferson County, and Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman, R-Centre County, announcing the resignation, said, “We are sickened and disturbed by the charges brought against Mike Folmer yesterday. We have reviewed the criminal complaint and spoke with Mike Folmer early this morning to insist on his resignation from the Senate. We are in receipt of his letter of resignation and the 48th Senatorial District seat is now vacant.”

The most serious charge lodged against the Lebanon County Republican is a second-degree felony, possession of child pornography. That carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

Folmer also is charged with a third-degree felony, criminal use of a communications facility, which allows for a maximum punishment of up to 7 years in prison and a $15,000 fine." (More)
