So I got a new camera that shoots HD video, and uses the .mts format. Can anyone (I'm looking at you, DMH) recommend a good piece of software that will convert .mts into more useable formats? There don't seem to be any free ones...

I have been using this
http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/
to make the ipod video into something useable. It works, but there is something creepy about it. It says it will do mts. It used to be a smallish stand alone, it looks bloated and the interface is "grandiose" for no apparent reason. There are presets, like if you go wmv you can choose 720 or what ever, but I don't think you can customize? I also don't think you can go uncompressed avi, all the avi's I saw were divx or xvid codec. Other than that, it did what I wanted, dropped a stack of ipod vid in and got editable stuff on the other side.

From chucks link

(I have tried to get VLC to do anything but play with results fail every time!)

You might want to look up handbrake
lots of people on the Archos forums use it to get their video done.

Subscribe or check daily on http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/. They frequently offer video conversion software. I am currently using Aiseesoft Total Video Converter http://www.aiseesoft.com/total-video-converter.html which was a free offering by giveawayoftheday. It supports the following HD video input formats - HD TS, HD MTS, HD M2TS, HD MPG, HD MPEG, HD MP4, HD WMV, QuickTime HD MOV, HD H.264, HD RM.

Came across this at makeuseof
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-free-...rt-f4v-videos/
It notes a reason HD video crashes programs.
