Somewhere on this ball we call "Earth"

"Sony Pictures has made official what has been painfully obvious to everybody since yesterday morning, when hackers threatened to blow up movie theaters if The Interview was released next week. The studio has officially scrapped its release plans. Sony had little choice here, after the major theater chains announced earlier today they would not display the film given the threatening circumstances. Here’s the statement:

“In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners’ decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers.

Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails, and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale – all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like. We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public. We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome.”

Meh, strictly a business move. If Americans didn't piss their pants at the sight of their own shadow it'd go on as scheduled. They're just sacrificing a few million to save a few billion. The (most likely) empty threat will keep people out of the theaters all-together and hurt all movies. It's not like anyone's missing out on the next Citizen Kane or anything -- just a half-baked comedy.

When the US govt. thwarts a real terror act they seem to like to shout about it from the highest mountain. We'll see whatever comes of this.

Jesus Christ, all the "nuke North Korea" comments. I kinda hope their next move is "turn off the internet or 9/11 part two electric boogaloo."

edit: Good article:

Ugh. Romcom. Yea that word itself needs to goe away, along with shit like Brangelina and Kimye. Seriously the word Kimye makes me want to murder.

Anyone else think this is a big marketing ploy? Like there will be a big outcry about cancelling the movie, then Sony will change its mind now that there is huge demand generated for an otherwise mediocre movie that would have made not that much money?

If it's a marketing ploy Sony should be brought up on serious charges. This is a bit worse than calling in a bomb scare because you don't feel like going to school.

There's probably a good chance Sony pulled the movie not out of "civic duty" but to take advantage of this shitstorm of publicity when they eventually release this movie through whatever channels they decide to. They better not have an email trail to this effect.

Now Sony is able to discern the capability of this group to launch terrorist attacks but during the last year of production they were unable to see that the movie they were making might get some panties bunched? Universal didn't pull The Last Temptation of Christ back in 1988. I guess America was a little tougher back then.

Universal stood strong and The Last Temptation of Christ was released on August 12, 1988. The loud voices against the film frightened many exhibitors, and the General Cinemas chain, then the fourth-largest in the country, refused to show it at all. When the film played the Venice Film Festival Franco Zeffirelli withdrew his film, The Young Toscanini, from the fest in protest. In the United States protesters lined up outside theaters showing the film, and in Los Angeles vandals splattered paint all over one theater playing the film. Threats were becoming so intense - including bomb threats against theaters - that Universal started paying for security at theaters showing the film.

And then it got violent. In Ithaca New York a man, wrapped in a blanket to protect himself from flying glass, drove a school bus into the lobby of a theater showing the movie. In Paris Christians actually bombed the Saint Michel Theater, severely burning four people and forcing the theater to close for three years. Another French theater was attacked with tear gas.
