Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away

I've finished AC2 and I highly recommend it if you liked anything about the first game. The graphics are better, the missions are better, the achievements are easier, and the story is one of the most interesting that I've seen in quite a while.

Plot
The Animus plot follows Ezio, a young Italian nobleman, in a Godfather-esque quest for revenge. The plot spans about 23 years, so you get to connect with him as he grows from a brash youngster into a skilled master assassin.

While this is very entertaining, the "Main Story Arc" plot was dynamite. Starting immediately after AC 1, Lucy rescues Desmond from Asbergo, and takes him to an Assassin hideout. Lucy explains that you will relive Ezio's life and hopefully absorb his assassin training for use in the battle against modern day Templars. Along the way, Desmond (while playing as Ezio) finds clues left behind by Subject 16 (the guy who left the markings in Desmond's room). The puzzle mini games used to decipher these clues can be maddening, but the game give you a hint after about 5 minutes. These clues start to unravel a larger conspiracy and history that has a good "X-files" vibe to it. Desmond sums it up nicely at the end of the game by saying, "What. The. Fuck."

Missions
The old mission model of "investigate these guys, assassinate this guy, repeat" is completely gone. The missions now are very lineal, "do this, then do that".

You can complete most objectives in various ways. Killing a target can be a simple as running up to the guy and hitting him with your hidden blade, or you can use new tools like poison, smoke bombs, or a pistol to mix things up a bit.

There are side missions, but you only have to do one of each kind for the achievements.

A new addition are Assassin Tombs. Ezio must collect items from these tombs to unlock the best armor in the game. Each tomb is laid out like an area from Prince of Persia. I thought these underground, interior puzzle environments were a nice change of pace from the other missions.

Achievements
If you were sick of collecting flags last time, don't worry. This time there are only 100 eagle feathers and most are pretty easy to find. Most of the other achievements are pretty simple. There are over 200 treasure chest scattered around the maps, but there is no Achievement for gathering them all. In fact, there is no achievement for 100% synch.

New stuff
A few new RPG-lite elements have been added. You get a villa early on in the game and you are tasked with upgrading it and decorating it with paintings. Also, you can collect weapons, dye your clothes, hire hookers and thieves to distract guards, hire mercs to fight your battles, and (my favorite) throw money on the ground to distract people and slow down guards.

All together, AC2 is by far the best single player game this year.

Hm, I had written this game off as I didn't really find the first all that compelling. Might have to play through this... although not until I have played the shit out of MW2.

That's a nice review. It sounds like precisely what I was hoping for. I liked AC1 but felt like it wasn't quite there, and was quite repetitive to boot. If AC2 was more of the same I would have definitely passed.

I am really enjoying this game. I think any and all complaints I had with the first were addressed, and ended up with a really solid, enjoyable game with a cool story and satisfying mechanics.

I did "The Truth" puzzles after finishing the game... the "truth" was pretty freaking cool, and exactly the kind of capper to make me really psyched for the next game. I like where this story is going.
