We boarded a train and ferry to the island of Miyajima, home of the Itsukushima Shrine. The red structure is a torii, an entrance to a Shinto shrine. This torii is in the water (during high tide) because the island shrine is accessed from the water.

One course of an amazing dinner. That fish was looking at me the whole time.

After dinner we went out to check out the island at night.

After an equally amazing breakfast, we left to explore the island.

There are tame deer everywhere.

And vending machines, of course.

If I still wasn't sure I was really far from home, Miyajima kind of clinched it.

Here you'd pour water on the statues' heads in prayer. The toys, as far as I know, signify that these are probably prayers for children who have died.

This area reverberated with the sound of Shinto drumming and prayer.

Back to the station in Hiroshima to board the Shinkansen for Kyoto. Most ticket holders would go through the automatic turnstiles, but I had a tourist rail pass so I'd have to show it to the guys on the left.

A map so you could pick out exactly which toilet you'd like to use, then know how to get there.

The Shinkansen arrives, right on time and right on the dime (video)

Next up, Volume 4. Check in to future in the capsule hotel, Kyoto.
