Somewhere on this ball we call "Earth"

"In light of AOLís headline-making purchase of TechCrunch and its efforts to rebrand as an online media company, an interesting note about the companyís business as it currently stands: 40% of AOLís revenue still comes from selling dial-up Internet subscriptions. To whom, we have no idea.

Wall Street Journal:

While the company continues to invest in its new strategy, its business hasnít moved much beyond its old one: More than 40% of its revenue still comes from selling dial-up Internet service and related subscription products, the legacy business it has been trying to shed for years."

The real America not that part where you live.

Only a few miles from my house and maybe less dial up is all that is available and I bet half those are using AOL to do so.

Rural areas (some right outside the city limits) around my town have little or no choice. Either dial-up, cellphone internet or satellite. Most choose dial-up due to cost. ATT just won't run broadband into the sticks.

Yep, guess I hadn't thought of that. I didn't even know AOL still offered dial up service. I wonder if Compuserve and Prodigy are still out there...

I still remember feeling vaguely superior to AOL people back when I was a Compuserve guy in the early 90s.

Compuserve was awesome. My internets name was 74277.2313 or some such 90s awesomeness.

You guys made me look up my Compuserve addy - 73511,1673. Logged on around January '94, IIRC.

Back then I didn't even have a local phone line, I had to dial in long distance. Then, Compuserve charged per minute to connect (I think AOL was flat-rate first, and led the way). I was a Sysop in a forum where we hosted constant group chats... one month I paid about $250 just for my phone bill, and another $250 for the per-minute charge. $500 that month, just to play on the pre-interwebs. Probably connected at 14.4k.

If we didn't cut a deal (too complicated to explain) that allows us a half (actually a full, they don't seem to know that) T1 line, I don't know what our options here would be. I ran dialup at work for waaaaay too long.

Is this a foot fetish thing? If so shouldn't it like Mistress Toe or something?

Visiting my brain at the funny farm.

I started out on the WWW with AOL (DukeGL1) high school nickname initials 1 because I am #1, actually I've no idea why the 1 anymore. As soon as Comcrap began offering broadband internet I jumped on it (GearJammer) CB (old school version of chat rooms) handle I went by. When I dumped Comcrap some years back, I was on dial-up through NetZero for a couple days before I decided that dial-up was completely unusable on the internet these days, and got DSL. I pity anyone with no options other than dial-up or paying through the nose for sat internet. Don't know for sure what I'd do in that situation.

Could be she has yet to file the patent on her invention, the toe mister, and is simply trying to keep things hushed until she's covered.

At the time, I was obsessed with ToeJam and Earl. You know, from Sega? And then it morphed into MisterToe and then SenorToe.

And then I realized how gay it was that I was hanging out in AOL Star Trek Chat rooms and calling myself Mistertoe so I stopped doing that.

Ahem.
